To the Editor: I read in wonderment the article on the filling of the Economic Development Commission in Ellisville (West Newsmagazine, June 25). I wonder, “If a K-Mart closes, can Walmart now be built? One of the reasons Walmart was not built was because it would put out of business the so called “mom and pop” stores, which I think some in the community cited. Maybe the newly hired economic development consultant, Eugene Norber, could approach Walmart to see if they would like to build a store on the corner of Clarkson and Manchester or at the empty Best Buy ...

Cheak leaving CBC to take over SLUH volleyball club

When the CBC Cadets volleyball club takes the court in the spring of 2015, it will have a new leader on the bench. Longtime coach Jeff Cheak is leaving to take over as head coach at St. Louis University High School. Cheak formally accepted the SLUH job early last week. In eight seasons at the helm at CBC, Cheak fielded one of  the area’s most competitive programs in and out of the Metro Catholic Conference. Ports wins her 13th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur championship

Lucky No. 13? For Ellen Port, the number’s good. Port won her 13th Metropolitan Women’s Amateur Championship recently at Forest Hills Country Club. It was her first title since 2010. Port, who has won six USGA events, outlasted defending champion Catherine Dolan over 36 holes, winning by five strokes with scores of 72-70 for a 2-under total to win the 22nd annual MAGA Women’s Amateur.
