Fort Zumwalt South boys netters roll into postseason

Fort Zumwalt South boys tennis coach David Fox suspected at the outset of the season that his Bulldogs club would be pretty good once they got into regular season play. As the regular season winds down this week, Zumwalt South has been determined and strong on the courts as the Bulldogs finished their season on Tuesday with an 11-2 slate. It has been a watershed season for Zumwalt South as the Bulldogs have just completed the best start and best regular season in program and school history. “We felt like coming in to the season we had a chance to ...

McAfee provides leadership and more for young Francis Howell Central spikers

A year ago, Connor McAfee was more of a supporting cast member for the 2017 Francis Howell Central boys volleyball club, that had nine seniors and pushed  the Spartans to a 25-8-1 mark and a Class 4 quarterfinal appearance. This spring the leadership mantle has fallen to McAfee and McAfee, the Spartans lone returning senior starter, has provided that and plenty more through the first five weeks of play. McAfee, a 5-10 leaper that starts at outside hitter, has been the Spartans go-to go guy on offense leading the club in kills, and is ninth in the area in kills, ...

Stacey Smith walked into Francis Howell athletic director Sean Erwin’s office on Monday and informed Erwin he was resigning as girls volleyball coach due to family obligations. “It was extremely difficult to make this decision and it wouldn’t matter where I was coaching or what level, it’s hard to leave that part behind since I’ve been coaching for the past 22 years, it becomes part of your identity,” Smith said. Smith’s wife, who is a full time nurse, is in training to be a nurse practitioner. Smith noted that with her schedule becoming hectic with that and the demands of ...

Despite tough state finish, Francis Howell softball has stellar season

The 2017 Class 4 softball tournament did not go the way the Francis Howell Vikings would have liked. Not even close to that. Still, for coach Jenn Beckmann-Brown’s 2017 club, the Vikings had a season that will be long remembered and cherished by the Francis Howell community. Howell lost to Marquette 6-4 in the Class 4 semifinals and fell to Staley 12-1 in the third place last Friday at Killion Sports Complex in Springfield. “We knew we had a special group of girls early this year and we knew that we had the ability to go to state and so ...

Francis Howell prepares for state after Boschert’s big day in quarterfinal win over Howell North

In 2015, Francis Howell senior softball player Whitney Boschert was just a sophomore when the Vikings got bounced from the Class 4 quarterfinals by rival Francis Howell North. Last Saturday, Boschert led the charge to make sure the Vikings would get revenge for that playoff loss. Boschert went 5 for 5 with two home runs, knocked in five runs, and pitched the Vikings past the Knights for a 12-2 quarterfinal win at Howell North. Saying it was vindication for Boschert and the Vikings would be a spot-on description. “It felt great since we thought 2015 was going to be our ...

On a day better suited for ducks and beavers to frolic outdoors, Liberty golfers Madeline Larouere and Zoee Harrington played like the elements were no big deal at all.
