Local schools, state politicians seek solutions in teen vaping epidemic

The Francis Howell School District joined with The Olathe Public Schools in Kansas and the Three Village Central School District in New York in filing a lawsuit in federal court against JUUL Labs, Inc., alleging that the e-cigarette company deliberately marketed products to underage consumers. The first suit by the district was filed as early as Sept. 27 by The Olathe Public Schools in Kansas. Francis Howell filed its suit on Sept. 30, the same day as the New York’s district.

Three FHSD schools make National Blue Ribbon list

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized Becky-David Elementary, Daniel Boone Elementary and Warren Elementary as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2019. The Francis Howell schools received the prestigious award based on their high academic performance. Only five other elementary schools in Missouri received the award this year.

Harvest Ridge Elementary receives $25,000 STEM grant

Harvest Ridge Elementary has been selected to receive a $25,000 grant from America’s Farmers Grow Rural Education, sponsored by the Bayer Fund. The grant is intended to increase engagement, accessibility and achievement in science, technology, engineering and math [STEM] fields.

Jungermann Road bridge repairs set for 2020 completion

Construction of a new bridge structure on Jungermann Road located north of Country Creek Drive remains ongoing. The west side of the bridge, roadway and sidewalk improvements are scheduled to be completed in November 2019. The entire project is slated to be completed in April 2020.

O’Fallon approves new lease, tenant for CarShield Field

The O’Fallon City Council voted at it's Sept. 26 meeting to approve a lease with O’Fallon Baseball Associates, LLC, to place a new baseball team at CarShield Field for the 2020 season. The new ownership group also will be responsible for the stadium's daily management and operations. The new team, which will relocate O’Fallon from Hannibal, Missouri, will play in the Prospect League, a summer collegiate wood-bat league.

Dardenne Elementary students learn STEM skills

After winning a contest in 2018, representatives from Mastercard’s Girls4Tech visited technology teacher Stacey Sweeso’s classroom at Dardenne Elementary in mid-September. Representatives spent an hour with fourth grade girls and an hour with  fifth grade girls.

Girl scouts go for the gold

Girl Scout gold award

Girl Scouts of Eastern Missouri announced that multiple local students were recent recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Sarah Wyble, Jillian Rodgers and Alyssa Miller were recognized along with other Gold Award Girl Scouts at a ceremony at Lindenwood University in St. Charles.
