Clemenzo’s takes Italian takeout to a new level

Paul Wegeng, owner of Clemenzo’s, knew there had to be more to Italian take-out and delivery than pizza.

Like other busy parents, Wegeng wanted quality food, made to order and designed for families to enjoy at home.

“I’m a father with a family to feed. I’m busy but I didn’t want fast food all the time. I wanted a takeout option that was more like a home-cooked meal. Something besides pizza and Door-Dashing. That’s why I opened Clemenzo’s, an alternative to pizza,” Wegeng said. “It filled what I saw was a need for exclusively take-out and delivery that’s based on fresh Italian.”

Clemenzo’s offers a tight menu that’s not too big, not too small, but just right. A menu offering classic Italian specialties with a focus on pasta.

“Pasta is what we do. Usually, when a place sells pasta, they sell a lot of other things with it. We don’t. You can’t get a steak at our place, and we don’t serve pizza,” Wegeng said. “What we do is just right. We make everything using fresh ingredients and we make it affordable so you can feed your family a quality home-cooked meal instead of just getting takeout pizza.”

Clemenzo’s offers five family-bundle meals. Pick from Lasagna, Baked Penne, Fettuccini Alfredo with or without chicken, or the house best seller, spaghetti and meatballs. Each bundle serves 4-5 people and includes a family-sized salad, 10 breadsticks and a two-liter of soda. Each bundle is priced between $39.99 to $54.99.

Wegeng’s success in understanding what his customers want, is rooted in his 20-year foodservice experience, which includes a stint at the famed Arizona Camelback Inn & Resort, where he says he learned a lot before returning home to open his own family restaurants – Clemenzo’s and right next door, its south-of-the-board senior, Salty’s Fresh Mex, which opened in Cottleville in 2016.

At both locations, the key ingredient is the same.

“We make as much from scratch as we can,” Wegeng said. “Our meatballs are made from scratch, we hand-bread our Chicken Parmesan, and our homemade Alfredo is a favorite.”

Homemade sauces have contributed to garnering rave reviews for all eight of Clemenzo’s pastas. Three of those pastas – Clemenzo’s 4-Cheese Lasagna, Cajun Shrimp & Andouille and its Adult Mac & Cheese – are signature dishes that guests can’t resist. Try it once and you’ll develop a craving for the decadently delicious Mac & Cheese that pairs cavatelli with a smoked bacon cheese sauce and tops it with seasoned, grilled chicken.

All pastas and the chicken entrees are served with a salad and breadsticks, making the order a complete dinner. Each meal is generously plated and packaged to ensure it maintains its quality on the drive home.

Guests with smaller appetites can opt for an appetizer and a salad. Options include a traditional house, the classic Caesar, or a St. Louis-style Italian with Provel cheese, pepperoncini and artichokes. Every salad is topped with house-made croutons. Appetizer picks that can’t be missed include scratch-made fried mozzarella and hand-breaded toasted ravioli, stuffed with Italian sausage and cheese and paired with a side of sauce.

“Our menu is growing a little,” Wegeng said, noting that guests will be able to get gluten-free options in the future. “We’re also adding more appetizers. We got a lot of requests for chicken wings, so, we’re adding those. We’re also adding another sandwich, a meatball sandwich.”

If the meatball sandwich is built like the Italian Beef Dip – deeply layered with beef, smothered in melted mozzarella and covered with chopped pepperoncini – Wegeng can expect another winner.
