Francis Howell North High journalism staffs earned numerous awards last month during the virtual Spring National High School Journalism Convention.
The staffs earned numerous Top 10 finishes in the Best of Show competition. “The Knightly Show”, Francis Howell North Media’s weekly news show, placed seventh in the Broadcast category. The North Star brought home two Top 10 finishes with a 9th place finish in the Special Edition category and a second place finish in the Newsmagazine category. FHNtoday.com nabbed 1st Place Best of Show in the Large School Website category.
“Our website has gone through a lot of changes this year, both with our staff and with the content we’ve been posting, so it’s a huge honor to win Best of Show,” Online Editor-in-Chief Ashlynn Perez said. “I was so excited when I heard the news. It’s always great to see when your hard work pays off. I’m so proud of everyone who contributes to the website and pours all their hard work into our program daily.”
Two students placed in the National Student Media contests. Perez and Emily Zhang, both seniors, each earned Excellent ratings in Feature Writing (Perez) and Videography (Zhang).
Two staff members were also honored over the weekend for being named Pacemaker finalists. The Excalibur was honored as a yearbook finalist and FHNtoday.com was an online news site finalist.
“It’s been a really wild last 12 months and Mrs. Kiel and I are just so proud of these students and how hard they’ve worked day in and day out through it all,” Media Adviser Aaron Manfull said. “Each of the staffs were honored this weekend and it will be all the more special for them as it shows someone else recognized all their hard work during this time as well.”
The program’s student editor-in-chiefs who oversee production of the media are: senior Sydney Ellison (North Star Newsmagazine), junior Claire Brockmann (Excalibur Yearbook), Perez (FHNtoday.com Web), senior Gabe Lobato (FHNtodayTV Podcast), senior Emily Zhang (FHNtodayTV Social Media) and senior Anna Hollinger (Photography). The journalism program at Francis Howell North is led by Manfull and Jordyn Kiel. They oversee the nearly 100 members on staff and 300 students who run through the program each year.
