At the Dec. 10 council meeting, O’Fallon Mayor Bill Hennessy awarded a proclamation on behalf of the city to the Fort Zumwalt South High boys varsity soccer team for their recent championship victory at the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) 2020-2021 Class 3 Boys’ Soccer State Championship title.
Council member Deana Smith (Ward 1) presented the proclamation and congratulated the team, varsity head coach Jim Layne, and assistant coaches Kevin Jacobsmeyer and Joe Heuer.
The proclamation’s wording outlined that the team has 19 members, and had won the championship in spite of losing five players due to COVID-19 related issues.
State Representative John Wiemann (R-District 103) then announced that the Missouri House of Representatives had passed a resolution recognizing the Fort Zumwalt South soccer team for winning their second state championship. Wiemann also presented that resolution to the team.
The tournament started Nov. 7 and ended with the state championship game in Springfield, Missouri, on Nov. 20 where the Fort Zumwalt South Bulldogs (22-4) defeated the Cape Girardeau Notre Dame Bulldogs (16-1) by a score of 3-0.
Fort Zumwalt South previously won the championship back in 2018.
