Dear readers, we need to ask you for a simple favor that can make a massive impact on our business. For more than 15 years, we have mailed you a copy of Mid Rivers Newsmagazine a few times a month through the United States Postal Service. You did not have to ask for it nor did you have to pay for it; you just had to live in a single-family home within our distribution footprint. The cost of producing and delivering the paper is covered through the sale of advertisements, mostly to local businesses.
Not sure if you have heard, but both small businesses and the U.S. Postal Service are under a whole bunch of stress lately. COVID-19 has made the already incredibly difficult job of running a local business that much more difficult. For the past several years, the USPS has been raising rates at a historic pace due to all kinds of changes in customer behavior. When you are sending out one envelope at a time, postal increases do not seem like a big deal. But when you are mailing out 57,000 papers twice a month, those increases hit really hard. We have always tried to absorb the increased cost to protect our advertising partners, but it is simply getting too hard under current circumstances.
Which brings us to the favor we need to ask:
We need you to request this paper.
That’s it. We simply need you to visit midriversnewsmagazine.com/request and fill out a very quick online form that says you would like to receive the paper. It is a voluntary subscription that is completely free of charge.
Your request allows us to qualify for a different postal permit. You do not have to buy a subscription, and we will never use or sell your information for any other purpose than to send you this newspaper.
There is something in this for you, for us and for our advertisers. For us, we save a few bucks on postage and will continue to fund the quality local journalism one can only find in Mid Rivers Newsmagazine. For local businesses, it means they can still afford to promote their products to our large readership. And for you, you actually get more control over how the newspaper is delivered. You can forward it to your vacation home, you can pause delivery during business trips, or pretty much do anything you can do with first class mail. Plus, we hope that you will feel good knowing that you have helped to support local journalism, local businesses and local jobs.
We believe very strongly that a thriving democracy requires an informed citizenry, particularly at the local level where there are fewer and fewer sources of quality journalism. Across this country, businesses like ours are becoming more and more rare. By qualifying for this new class of postage, our business becomes more sustainable and we can continue to conveniently deliver vital local information and interesting business promotions directly into your mailbox.
Once again, all we need you to do is ask to receive the paper by
We will absolutely never sell your information or use it for any purpose other than managing your voluntary subscription.
Alternatively, there is a form on page 13 of the Nov. 4 print edition that you can cut out and mail back to us if that is easier for you.
We thank you and our advertising partners so much for taking this small step to make such a big difference. We look forward to continuing to serve all of you for years to come.
By the way, due to U.S. postal service regulations, our use of the permit and its related benefits for you, including new subscriptions, will not go into effect until after USPS review in 2021.
