Another reason for skin exams

Although the importance of annual skin cancer screenings is widely known, there’s another reason older adults should visit their dermatologists regularly.

In a recent study of more than 550 adults between the ages of 70 and 93 in which participants had full-body skin examinations, 80% had at least one additional skin disease that required treatment. Nearly 40% of participants had three or more simultaneous skin diseases. The most common conditions found during the study exams were fungal skin infections, rosacea, actinic keratosis and eczema.

Skin disease findings were more common in men than in women. There were also weak associations between different skin diseases and socioeconomic status, as well as whether the person lived alone or not.

“This research emphasizes the importance of whole body skin evaluations in older patients, as skin diseases are common in this age group,” the study report stated. “A whole body skin examination may reveal hidden skin symptoms, and ensures timely diagnoses and appropriate treatment.”
