As of May 4, St. Charles County’s Parks and Recreation Department opening back places and loosening restrictions to align with Gov. Mike Parson’s Show Me Strong statewide recovery plan.
As of May 18, almost all of St. Charles County’s Parks and amenities have officially opened to receive guests again. The only exception is the 25-acre Youth Activity Park in Dardenne Prairie, which is currently set to reopen on June 1. Some indoor facilities and shelter rentals are open, but have restrictions in place.
It is important to note that all dog parks, playgrounds, water play areas, drinking fountains, and the camping kitchen and showers at Klondike Park will continue to remain closed until further notice. This is due to the high-contact nature of the areas.
During the stay-at-home order, the St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department took the time to complete new facilities and develop new areas in the parks. Here is a list of some of the updates that visitors might notice during their next visit.
- A new Phoenix Composting Restroom opened at The Park at New Melle Lakes. The system, which includes a sink with running water and hand sanitizer, is installed at the area’s main parking lot. in compliance with guidelines set by the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], the composting restroom turns human waste into a well-stabilized mulch. Other composting restrooms already established in our parks were also upgraded to comply with EPA regulations. This meant that each unit had to be converted and new water lines installed, meaning all the composting restrooms now offer potable water and are available for use.
- New sod was installed in the Off-Leash Dog Area at Veterans Tribute Park Weldon Spring. Grass was laid near the shelter and other areas around the park. The new sod will help prevent erosion and create a more durable green space.
- The inside of the complex at Youth Activity Park was recently repainted. This is the first of a series of upgrades park the park will receive over the next few months. Other improvements include new amenities, an update of the park’s masterplan, and the eventual opening of a large asphalt pump track in 2020.
- Renovations to the Landhaus at The Park at New Melle Lakes remain ongoing. Upon completion, the venue will be available to reserve for events. The property’s existing house can hold over 100 guests and comes with outdoor seating and lighting. Inside, St. Charles County staff continue to convert two large powder rooms into a bride and groom’s quarters.
While many of these county park spaces are open, all visitors are still required to continue following social distancing and other Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommendations.
