The night of Feb. 21 at Lutheran High was special for Missouri athletes. In addition to the school’s varsity and junior varsity boys basketball games against Christian High, another game was played between two teams of special athletes with a love for the sport.
The Special Olympics Missouri athletes played in front of players, fans, spirit squads and parents of both schools. The event served as a fundraising opportunity for Special Olympics Missouri. It was Lutheran’s High’s first time hosting the event.
“[About] $1,100 was raised in just 1 minute during halftime of our Special Olympics basketball game,” Kaitlyn Woodard, Lutheran High senior and student council member, said. “We called it a ‘miracle minute.’ We put 1 minute on the scoreboard and had our Lutheran High Sapphires and the Christian High cheerleaders run into the stands to collect as many donations as they could.”
Overall, the event raised $1,500 for Special Olympics Missouri.
