Dancers of all ages and skill levels can find their niche at Saint Louis Ballet School. On Feb. 1, registration opens for the school’s summer programs. Administrator Tanya Strautmann, who danced professionally with Saint Louis Ballet for 16 years, says ballet develops lifelong skills.
“Ballet teaches you discipline, focus, and is a great form of exercise,” Tanya said. Because Saint Louis Ballet School is the educational branch of Saint Louis Ballet, students are learning from those professionals as well as guest teachers.
Tanya says summer classes are highly encouraged in order to stay sharp.
“It’s a muscle development and skill that needs continued training. You don’t want to lose that muscle training over the summer,” Tanya noted.
The school offers several summer programs for every age and level. Storybook Camps for ages 3-4 and 5-6 offer fun themes such as The Nutcracker, Cinderella, and Sleeping Beauty, and are filled with dance, crafts, a performance for parents and more. For ages 7-9, 10-13 and 14-21, Saint Louis Ballet School offers up to four weeks of programs. Participants will take ballet classes such as technique and variations, interspersed with classes of other genres such as contemporary, musical theater, jazz and Pilates [classes vary based on age group].
“It’s a very well-rounded program for students,” Tanya said.
For adults and students needing evening summer classes, Saint Louis Ballet School offers ballet classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer.
