Most residents of St Charles County and its municipalities would agree that it is a great place to live. We are blessed with excellent fire, police and ambulance services. New parks have been opened for all to enjoy. Bike paths, trails and sidewalks are appearing to meet the needs of citizens. Many larger cities have swimming pools, rec centers and meeting spaces. The library system is second to none.
What is missing?
There is no reliable local public transportation in St. Charles County with the exception of SCAT, which services only the city of St. Charles. Yes, there is transportation available for the disabled and senior citizens on an “as needed” basis and OATS does provide transportation that is limited by contract funding availability. However, for those residents unable to own an automobile for whatever reason, it becomes a real challenge to get around.
Taxis, Uber, Lyft and other pay-as-you-go services are expensive. Some require the use of a credit card and an app. The essential needs of these citizens are not being addressed.
We urge both governmental and private entities to work together to bring affordable local public transportation to the citizens of St. Charles County. It is an issue whose time has come to be addressed.
