Clay North, a senior at St. Dominic High, wanted to honor a relative who had passed away from brain cancer by raising money for Angels Among Us as his senior service project.
Angels Among Us is a not-for-profit charity that raises money for the Preston Robert Tisch Brain Center at Duke University. Angels Among Us uses the funds to provide patients with medical treatment and further research to fight brain cancer.
With help from friends, North raised money by selling t-shirts, hosting a silent auction and obtaining online donations. They raised $10,000, far surpassing his original $2,000 goal.
“The charity and the $10,000 raised means more than words can describe,” North said. “Five years ago, I lost my uncle to a stage 4 glioblastoma brain tumor and I was too young to really understand what his loss meant to me. This was a great opportunity for me to give myself a chance to do something, and it has been the best experience of my life.”
North presented the check to Angels Among us board members Tom DeGrand and Carol Taylor. North will also have the opportunity to sit in on one of the Angels Among Us board meetings and fly to Duke University for their annual charity run event later this year.
North’s cousin, Taylor, was proud of his cousin’s efforts in his father’s memory.
“I can feel my dad saying he is extremely proud of Clay for putting all of this time and effort to raise awareness for this horrible diagnosis,” Taylor said. “I know my dad did every trial of drug his doctors allowed just so they could find a cure in the future. I know my family and myself are lost in words of how proud we are of Clay.”
