Letter to the Editor: Regarding Walter Williams

Walter E. Williams’ intellectual gymnastics are impressive. In his last article “U.S. in moral decline” [Nov. 6], Mr. Williams claims the mantle of victimhood for the most privileged and powerful in America. See, since the rich may not want to pay taxes, the fact that they have to do so basically means that they are slaves.

This ridiculous conclusion presumes the rich A) have no obligation to contribute to society beyond their own whims B) the rich don’t benefit from government spending.  Of course, the rich benefit the most from indirect [interstates only benefit people who own cars] and direct [bank bailouts] government largesse. For Mr. Williams, routine government taxing and spending is a show of moral decline.

Mr. Williams also lavishes praise on Attorney General William Barr’s speech claiming moral decline is caused by people advocating for constitutionally mandated separation of church and state. Quite frankly, anyone looking to the Trump administration for moral guidance should have their head examined.  Even a dedicated Trumpist is likely to squirm if asked to present the President as an example of moral character to children.

As I have said before, Mr. Williams is a bad faith actor who should not be given a platform.

Mr. Williams must be speaking for himself and fanatical believers when he says “we have become an immoral people” [Nov. 6]. For I can assure him that it is not the secular that are destroying America. It is the fervently religious that have eschewed the actual teachings of Jesus and chosen to exalt Trump as a savior. These are the true dangers to America’s morality. The people that post sanctimonious Bible quotes on Facebook but turn a blind eye to when our President mocked a disabled reporter or discussed watching teenage pageant contestants change backstage. These are the people that are causing the rot in America, and they generally call themselves Christians. I do not include all, or most Christians, but enough of them that the label of Christian no longer means what it used to. The “Christians” that applauded LGBTQ protections being stripped and rape victims conceivably being forced to carry a pregnancy to term. These are the Christians that are turning youth away from Christianity because they have become intolerant to anyone different and willing to sacrifice the teachings of the Bible in their pursuit of a few key political issues.

For Mr. Williams to even suggest that secular people are causing the ills of America is exactly the type of nonsensical smugness that turns people away from Christianity. Mr. Williams has proven himself to be a pawn in the Christian money making machine that knows victimhood and a perceived threat on Christianity is good for business.

What irony that Professor Williams would lecture on the moral decline of the U.S. while quoting William Barr. Barr, who has abused his position and chosen to galivant across the world; seeking to undermine U.S. Intelligence agencies, while flouting ethical standards all in the name of unfounded conspiracy theories born from the depths of 4chan. Next time Williams should consider quoting Putin to make the trolling a little less obvious.
