Schnuck Markets, Inc. announced Oct. 11 the closure of two St. Charles County stores, plus a third location in Edwardsville, Illinois. The three locations will close at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10. The closing stores are located at 100 Jungermann Road, St. Peters; 1421 Mexico Loop Road East, O’Fallon; and 2122 Troy Road, Edwardsville, Illinois.
The reason for the closures was cited as poor sales. All three stores have increased proximity to other Schnucks shopping locations. The St. Peters store is located about 3 miles from two other Schnucks locations. Both the O’Fallon and Edwardsville, Illinois stores are each less than 1 mile away from another Schnucks.
All three stores were former Shop ‘n Save locations acquired by Schnucks in 2018 from Supervalu Inc.
“After we acquired the Shop ‘n Save stores from Supervalu last year, we said that our customers would help us decide which stores will be successful,” Paul Simon of Schnucks Markets, Inc. Media Relations, said. “After one year, our customers’ shopping patterns have become [clearer], and these stores are not the ones they prefer.”
The St. Peters and O’Fallon stores in St. Charles County are leased locations. About 190 teammates at the three stores will be affected. However, Schnucks Market, Inc. stated in an official release on the closures that all affected employees will be offered transfers to other Schnucks stores where they will retain the same rate of pay.
“Our customers have overwhelmingly chosen to visit neighboring Schnucks stores much more frequently than these locations, and as difficult as it is to have to close a store, we simply cannot operate locations that are not profitable,” Schnucks Chairman and CEO Todd Schnuck said. “While these decisions are never easy, we are grateful that we are able to preserve our teammates’ jobs and pay, and grateful that our customers won’t have to travel far to visit us at other nearby Schnucks stores.”
Signage will be posted at each of the stores in the coming days alerting pharmacy customers of updated prescription pickup locations.
St. Peters prescriptions will transfer to Schnucks Mid Rivers, 577 Mid Rivers Mall Drive and O’Fallon [Mexico Loop Road East] prescriptions will transfer to Schnucks O’Fallon, 8660 Veterans Memorial Parkway. Pharmacy patients can visit any other Schnucks Pharmacy to have prescriptions filled.
Founded in 1939, Schnuck Markets, Inc. is a third-generation, family-owned grocery and pharmacy. According to Forbes’ 2018 rankings, Schnucks is the 168th largest privately-owned company in the United States and the 16th largest privately-owned grocer. It is St. Louis’ largest grocery chain and had $2.7 billion in annual revenue in 2018.
“That was before we acquired the Shop n’ Save stores,” Simon said. “That number will most certainly increase because we do have a larger amount of stores this year.”
