Don’t look now, but the housing market is making a liar out of the Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500, both of which began October foreshadowing an economic downturn. By comparison to their down numbers, the housing market has been trending up, with new home construction rising to its fastest pace since 2007 in August, and pending home sales trending up as interest rates fall, improving affordability.

“Unlike some of the previous manufacturing slowdowns we’ve seen during recessions, U.S. housing is doing quite well,” Keith Lerner, chief market strategist at SunTrust Advisory Services, wrote in an Oct. 2 memo to clients. “In fact, the NAHB Home Builders Index has climbed to the highest level of the year. Similarly, housing starts recently rose to a cycle high. This is important as this indicator has peaked almost two years ahead of recessions, on average.”

Looking for a new home locally? Here’s what’s new:

Griffey offers affordable custom homes

You can get exactly what you want by going custom with Griffey Homes.

Affordably priced from $100 per square foot, Griffey Custom Homes allow homebuyers to work directly with the home builder.

“We have architects available and an in-house designer. And, we offer construction financing at affordable rates,” said Griffey sales manager Kim Valerio. For more information on custom homes call her at (636) 936-1923 or email

Tim Griffey founded Griffey Custom Homes in 1984 and the company has been the choice of discerning homebuyers ever since. But the best part of working with Griffey is that its easy. Experts walk homebuyers through each step of the process and always pay attention to the homebuyers needs and wishes  – right down to floor plan selection and home sites.

“We will build your plan or our plan, on your land or our land,” Valerio said. “We have been building custom homes for over 30 years in St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren counties, and in West St. Louis County.”

Meanwhile, Griffey Homes has a new community coming on line very soon. Dragonstone is the builder’s newest upscale community on Bates Road in Dardenne Prairie which will feature 1/3-acre and larger homesites. All of the planned homes will have three-car garages and most will be walkout sites, according to Valerio.  For details on Griffey Homes communities call (636) 936-1923, email or visit
