On Sept. 20, Lutheran High’s Sapphires Spirit Squad put on a fundraiser at the Future Cougar Night football game to raise money for the school’s upcoming state competition in Kansas City. They hope to put the funds toward new uniforms for the competition.
The fundraiser offered the opportunity for future LHS students to dance with the Sapphires at the game and learn a fun halftime routine. Over 40 future Cougars attended, and the team was able to raise about $1,000.
Head coach Alex Milakis and assistant coach Brooke Schulte said they were both proud of how far the team has come since they started coaching.
“They top their performances every week,” Milakis said. “I’m so proud of them always!”
When asked what they loved most about the Sapphires, team captains Callie and Ella had nothing but praise for their teammates and coaches.
“We have lots of time to bond,” Callie said. “I love that our coaches are our friends – we’re able to learn from them as well as joke around.”
“Alex is always bringing new choreography to our dances,” Ella said. “My dance abilities have grown, and I’ve gained skills in cheerleading as well.”
This year, the team has 22 members who are skilled in both cheer and dance. Last year, they were able to attend the St. Charles Classic Dance Competition for the first time in school history.
This year, the team will attend both the St. Charles Classic and the Fort Zumwalt Classic.
