Students thank local veterans

Second grade students at Academy of the Sacred Heart show off thank you cards that were written for veterans attending the Sept. 7 Honor Flight.

To show appreciation for local veterans, students at Academy of the Sacred Heart wrote thank you cards for the local veterans attending an Honor Flight to Washington, D.C., that took place on Sept. 7. The idea came after students learned that the grandfather of Academy of the Sacred Heart student Elizabeth Sunderlage, was one of the veterans attending the flight after previously serving in both the Air Force and in the Korean War. The Honor Flight is put on by the Greater St. Louis Honor Flight organization, whose mission is to safely transport senior military veterans to Washington, D.C., to experience the major military memorials and visit Arlington Cemetery, where soldiers from wars as historic as the Civil War are buried on the 624-acre land. The veterans attending also receive a surprise homecoming upon their return to the airport including friends, family, Honor Guard, USO, Boy and Girl Scouts and active duty soldiers.
