Schools receive a gold star status

By: Jessica Meszaros

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education recognized Becky-David Elementary, Daniel Boone Elementary and Warren Elementary in the Francis Howell School District as 2019 Missouri Gold Star Schools. All three schools were also nominated by the U.S. Department of Education for recognition as 2019 National Blue Ribbon Schools. Only five other schools in Missouri were recognized this year as Gold Star Schools.

The Gold Star Schools program is designed to identify schools that are making exceptional progress.

“The students, faculty, and staff at these eight schools have earned this recognition,” Margie Vandeven, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education, said. “Their efforts reflect Missouri’s continuing work to prepare every student to succeed in school and in life.”

District Superintendent Dr. Mary Hendricks-Harris said the district was honored to have three schools in the district receive recognition.

“Our schools have been very focused on providing the best education for our students and continuously improving,” Dr. Hendricks-Harris said. “This recognition is a testament to the hard work our students put in to achieve those results and our dedicated staff that goes above and beyond every single day to help our students excel.”

The Gold Star Schools criteria also require student test scores to be in the top 15% of all public schools in Missouri.

“We are honored to be recognized as a Missouri Gold Star School,” Kevin Armour, Daniel Boone Principal, said. “This recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our staff and students. The Daniel Boone community takes great pride in our school and we would not be able to continue to achieve at such high levels without their support.”

The National Blue Ribbon Schools Program and the Missouri Gold Star Schools Program utilize the same criteria for nomination. Gold Star Schools must also meet one more year of qualifying Missouri Assessment Program scores in English language arts and mathematics to become National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The announcement will come in the fall of 2019.
