Local student recognized for leadership

O’Fallon council member Jeff Kuehn congratulates Reese Pecoraro at the May 23 City Council meeting.

At the May 23 O’Fallon City Council meeting, council member Jeff Kuehn [Ward 4] read a proclamation from Mayor Bill Hennessy and the entire council, recognizing Reese Pecoraro for earning a Girl Scout Gold Award and being a leader in the community.

Pecoraro is a student at Fort Zumwalt West High. The Gold Award is the Girl Scouts most prestigious award and requires at least 80 hours of community service.

After watching the news and seeing the aftermath of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High in Parkland, Florida, Pecoraro decided to do something to help others in the event of a similar occurrence. She planned and assembled 32 “buddy buckets” for Pleasant Point Elementary in O’Fallon, one for each classroom. The buckets contain materials that could help students in a similar situation such as gauze, bandages, stop-the-bleeding powder, puzzles, crayons and more to help students and teachers and provide comfort if the need arises.
