St. Charles County Councilmember John White [District 7] has been named the chairman of the council this year succeeding Councilmember Dave Hammond [District 4].
The council elected White as chairman at its Jan. 7 meeting as part of the annual election of chairs and vice chairs. Councilmember Joe Brazil [District 2] was elected vice chairman. The council chair presides over regular council meetings and calls special meetings and executive sessions.
“I appreciate the confidence,” White told his fellow councilmembers, “but I wasn’t quite sure about this tonight so I put on my best suit and best tie so in case I failed at least I would be dressed for it.” His remarks drew a laugh from the audience.
The council chose from two nominated councilmembers for the vice chair position. Councilmember Mike Klinghammer [District 6] nominated Councilmember Joe Brazil [District 2]. Brazil seconded Klinghammer’s motion. That also drew an audience laugh. “It’s only because he wore a tie tonight,” Klinghammer quipped.
Councilmember Joe Cronin [District 1] nominated Councilmember Terry Hollander [District 5], who wasn’t in attendance. Councilmember Mike Elam [District 3] seconded Hollander’s nomination.
Brazil’s nomination was approved by Klinghammer, Hammond, Brazil and White in a voice vote. Cronin and Elam voted for Hollander in a vote.
White was elected as a councilmember in 2001. He has owned a dental laboratory in St. Charles County since 1973 and has been involved in many local civic organizations including serving as a liaison to the University of Missouri Extension Center and on a board of the East-West Council of Governments.
Brazil was elected to the council in 2000. Before moving to the county, he served on the Florissant City Council from 1990-1996. He has been employed by Tremco Inc. as a roofing manufacturer consultant for more than 20 years.
