The St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department’s 2019 Phenological Walks series at Veterans Tribute Park near Weldon Spring will kick off at 10 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 4 and continue on every first Friday of the month through December. Led by Park Horticulture Specialist MaryAnn Fink, each guided walk lasts about one hour and focuses on a different aspect of nature each month.
Participants will observe and discuss the cycles of budding plants, migrating birds and other naturally occurring and seasonal events that will take place at the park from year to year.
During the first program on Jan. 4, Fink will talk about plants at the playground and around the lakes; the grey owl juniper shrubs in the landscape beds that boarder the parking lot; and how plant bud scales change as the weather changes. Interested participants should dress for the weather and meet at the informational kiosk next to the Destination Playground in the park.
The program is free and open to all ages, but registration is required.
