HHW collection season ends at Recycle Works Central Sept. 29

When cleaning garages, basements and backyard sheds at the end of summer, many homeowners discover unwanted leftovers like cleaning supplies, automobile fluids, oil-based paints and lawn care products. These household hazardous waste [HHW] materials can pose health risks and harm the environment when poured into drains, tossed into trash receptacles or dumped on the ground.

To provide St. Charles County residents with a safe option for the disposal of HHW, the Division of Environmental Health and Protection’s Recycle Works Central, 60 Triad South in St. Charles, and Recycle Works West, 2110 East Pitman in Wentzville, collect these items.

Although the Recycle Works West location accepts HHW year-round, the collection at Recycle Works Central concludes each year at the end of September. To recognize the end of the season, the division will host a special collection from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Recycle Works Central location only. There is a $15 fee [cash or check only] for loads up to 50 pounds. For larger loads, the base fee is $15, plus an additional $1 for each pound above 50.

To ensure safety, please follow these precautions when loading and transporting HHW for collection:

  1. When possible, leave the material in its original container. Any item not in original packaging should be labeled clearly with a description of the content.
  2. Secure the lid tightly. Do not mix waste with other materials. Recycle Works locations will not accept mixed waste in plastic bags or other containers.
  3. Place the secured container inside a box lined with newspapers. Fill any gaps with additional newspaper to help prevent spilling or tipping during transport.
  4. Place the box in the trunk of your vehicle and transport it to the closest Recycle Works location.
  5. Upon arrival at the facility, follow posted instructions and remain inside your vehicle until assisted.

Call (636) 949-1800 for questions about the HHW program or visit sccmo.org/recycleworks to view all recyclables accepted at the facilities.
