Firefighters buy new car seat for child after car fire

On the morning of Monday, Aug. 20, Central County Fire and Rescue Capt. Matt Dermody, Engineer Michael Roth and Firefighter Sam Sinovich saved a mother and her son from a motor vehicle fire in the 2600 block of Muegge Road in St. Charles.

The car in which Xavier Garrett and his mother were riding caught fire and was destroyed. Once the fire was extinguished, the crew realized that Xavier’s car seat had been damaged in the blaze. Dermody and his crew immediately went to the nearby Target store in St. Charles and purchased a new car seat for him. To top it off, the generous staff at Target St. Charles took 40-percent off the purchase price of the car seat. Donations from the Central County Community Outreach program covered the remaining cost of the car seat.
