Recognized for empowering teens

By: Ellen Lampe

Sharon Duggan-Jinga, a Fort Zumwalt West English language arts teacher, and her advanced speech students won the Greatest Save Teen Public Service Announcement [GSTPSA] contest for the second consecutive year. Duggan-Jinga’s class won the regional competition with a video submission that focused on domestic abuse. The video featured a female student with a black eye staring directly into the camera and a male student’s voice in the background repeating phrases such as “I’m sorry,” and “It won’t happen again.”

The mission of GSTPSA is to empower children and teens through peer-to-peer education to prevent sexual and domestic abuse and exploitation.

In honor of their achievement, Duggan-Jinga and her students will be recognized Tuesday, June 12 at a St. Louis Cardinals game. Their video now will compete against other regional winners for the chance to air during the 2018 MLB All-Star game on Tuesday, July 17.
