St. Charles County housing permits off to a steady start in 2018

The number of single-family housing permits issued in St. Charles County during the first two months of the year was steady in St. Charles County compared to the same period in recent years.

In January and February, 242 single-family permits were issued in the county, compared to 262 for the same period in 2017, 263 for the same period in 2016, 214 for same two months in 2015, 233 for the first two months of 2014 and 251 for the same period in 2013.

The number of multi- family permits for condominiums and apartments issued in January and February was up from a year ago. Four permits for 48 units were issued during January and February in the county. The latest statistics from the county show no multi-family permits were issued during the first two months of 2017, and four permits for 62 units in January and February 2016.

The statistics are gathered by the St. Charles County Community Development Department and include numbers for the county’s major municipalities.

As expected, Wentzville continues to lead municipalities in the number of housing permits issued. For the first two months of the year, 57 single-family and no multi-family permits were issued.

Next was the city of St. Charles with 44 single-family permits issued in January and 21 in February.

Then, O’Fallon had 23 single-family permits issued in January and 27 single-family permits issued in February.

In the city of St. Charles, 44 single-family housing permits were issued in January and 21 single-family permits were issued February. No multi-family permits were issued in St. Charles in those two months.

Other municipal totals for housing permits for the first two months of the year were not high.

In Cottleville, six single-family permits were issued in January, and seven were issued in February.

In Lake Saint Louis, two single-family housing permits were issued in January and 14 were issued in February, and no multi-family permits were issued in either month.

Eight single-family permits were issued in January and seven in February in St. Paul.

Five single-family permits were issued in January and 13 single-family permits in February in an area of the county that includes unincorporated area, Augusta, Weldon Spring and West Alton.

No housing permits were issued for the first two months in Josephville.

In St. Peters, three single-family and 16 multi-family permits were issued in January and four single-family permits and 24 multi-family permits were issued in February.

Single-family housing permits have been a gauge of overall economic health of the county. For years, the county has been the leader in the number of single-family housing permits issued in the St. Louis metropolitan area.

For all of 2017, 1,545 single-family permits were issued in the county, and 453 multi-family permits were issued in the county, for a total of 1,998. The single-family total was down a bit from recent years, the county has averaged more than 1,700 single-family permits annually and multi-family permits issued have fluctuated over the years.

Wentzville continues to lead other county municipalities in the number of single-family housing permits and housing permits in general.
