On Feb. 3 in Orlando, Florida, the Fort Zumwalt West High varsity dance team advanced to the finals in the jazz and hip hop categories of the UDA National Dance Team Championship. It was the second consecutive year the team has finished Top 10 in the nation in two categories but this year they pulled off becoming No. 1 and were named the National Hip Hop Champions.
“Each year we have the same goal,” Coach Rachel Damlow says, “Advance to finals.”
This year, for the second year, they met that goal in two categories – finishing first in hip hop and eighth in jazz.
Only one other team in the state of Missouri has earned the title. The West High team has been competing at the championships since 2009, placing in hip hop each year since 2013 until finally earning the No. 1 spot.
“This team has worked hard all year long, spending countless hours preparing for this competition,” Damlow said. “Their talent, dedication and commitment to this team certainly paid off!”
