Mike’s Grill & Tap: A mom-and-pop burger joint with a well-rounded menu

Mike Holmes has been in the restaurant industry since he was a teenager, working as a dishwasher in a cafeteria in Jamestown Mall. He spent his summers bussing tables and running food for Jordan’s Restaurant in North County before going off to college and serving in the United States Navy.

“I love the business. I love the people aspect,” said Holmes, who took ownership of Mike’s Grill & Tap in O’Fallon last July.

After college, Holmes spent the better part of 15 years working at Citizen Kane’s Steakhouse before opening Sherlock’s Steak & Seafood with a business partner. His business partner at Sherlock’s bought him out and, on July 6, 2017, Holmes took the leap into sole ownership when he purchased Mike’s Grill & Tap.

Located at 2447 Hwy. K in the Four Seasons Shopping Center, Mike’s Grill & Tap is known for its extensive craft beer selection and its juicy, high-end short rib burgers.

With 24 craft beers on tap, the bar and grill offers beer options for all types of beer connoisseurs. From the light wheat beer, NOCO314 – named after Mike’s hometown – to the Angry Irish Wife, Guinness and Blue Moon, 19 of the taps rotate every seven to 10 days. The bar and grill also has more than 20 types of beers available in bottles.

“I try to get stuff that not everyone has, that maybe is harder to find, but I also try to keep stuff that people want,” said Holmes.

Holmes also will poll his customers to see what types of beers they would like to try.

“Then, I’ll bring it in for them,” said Holmes. “At the end of the day, I put on there what people want.”

The restaurant also offers a delectable variety of lunch and dinner choices for all palates. The extensive menu ranges from chicken wings and pretzels to burgers and sandwiches to pork chops and salmon. The made-from-scratch burgers are super-popular among diners, especially the ‘Mike’s Favorite’, which is a short rib and beef mixture patty topped with blue cheese crumbles, Applewood smoked bacon, homemade spicy tomato chutney and onion straws on a pretzel bun.

The bar and grill offers special promotions nearly every day. A few weeks ago, the restaurant launched its mug promotion, giving customers the opportunity to purchase a T-shirt and tastefully engraved mug. The Tuesday special is an 8-ounce sirloin steak with the veggie and potato of the day. Sunday features an all-day happy hour. And, on Wednesdays, Holmes partners with Cupcake Amore to provide complimentary cupcakes to all customers.

Mike’s Grill & Tap will cater events on- or off-site. The restaurant has a party room that can accommodate up to 25 people and the entire restaurant can be rented to host larger parties.

“We’re just a little mom-and-pop with a good, well-rounded menu,” said Holmes.

And customer service is of utmost importance to Holmes.

“I believe that, even though it’s a hamburger, you should get the same service as if you were at a Ruth’s Chris or a Citizen Kane’s,” said Holmes. “What you buy shouldn’t determine the level of service you receive.”
