St. Charles County Parks awarded for prairie preservation

St. Charles County Parks and Recreation Department recently was awarded the 2017 Dick Dawson Prairie Pioneer of the Year Award by the Missouri Prairie Foundation.

This prestigious award recognizes the parks department for making outstanding contributions as a leader in prairie conservation by advocating for the acquisition and conservation of original prairie and prairie plantings in public spaces; encouraging and assisting implementation of prairie plantings and reconstructions in privately owned landscapes; advocating or promoting prairie plantings and protection; and promoting understanding of prairie value through research and publications.

The parks department specifically was recognized for being dedicated to recreation, while leaving at least 50 percent of any acquired land in natural undeveloped green space as prairie planting establishments in each park. Additionally, park staff was recognized for educating citizens about prairies through field trips, guided public hikes and partnerships with the Missouri Master Naturalist, Confluence Chapter.
