The number of single-family and multi-family permits issued in St. Charles County in the first six months of this year are down, compared to the same period of each of the last four years.
Through the end of June, 867 single-family housing permits have been issued in the county. Although the pace of single-family housing activity remains steady, the total number of permits issued for the first half of the year is down from previous years. For the first six months, 911 single-family permits were issued in 2016, 939 in 2015, 932 in 2014 and 894 in 2013.
The big drop is in multi-family permits for condominiums, villas and apartments. In all, 47 multi-family permits have been issued in the county this year through June, compared to 403 issued for the same period in 2016, 93 for the same period in 2015, 465 through June of 2014, and 59 for the first six months of 2013.
The statistics are compiled by the St. Charles County Community Development Department and include numbers for the county’s major municipalities and the unincorporated area.
Single-family housing permits have been a gauge of overall economic health of the county. For years, the county has been the leader in the number of single-family housing permits issued in the St. Louis metropolitan area.
For all of last year, 1,799 single- and multi-family permits were issued in the county, compared to 1,761 total permits in 2015, 1,832 issued in 2014, and 1,816 issued in 2013.
As of the end of June, Wentzville continues to lead other county municipalities in the number of single-family housing permits issued by municipalities and in parts of the unincorporated area.
Through June, 349 single- and 26 multi-family permits were issued in Wentzville. That compares to 343 single- and 78 multi-family permits for the first six months of 2016.
Following Wentzville, the city of St. Charles was next through June, with 158 single- and nine multi-family permits issued. O’Fallon, the county’s largest municipality, issued 125 single- and eight multi-family permits through June.
Eighty-eight single- and four multi-family permits were issued in the unincorporated part of the county, which includes Augusta, Weldon Spring and West Alton, through June of this year.
In Lake Saint Louis, 57 single- and no multi-family permits were issued for the first six months of this year. Thirty-eight single- and no multi-family permits were issued in Cottleville for this same period. Thirty-one single-family permits and no multi-family permits were issued in Flint Hill, Foristell, Josephville, New Melle, Portage des Sioux, St. Paul and Weldon Spring Heights.
A dozen single- and no multi-family permits were issued in Dardenne Prairie through June. Nine single-family and no multi-family permits were issued in St. Peters through June.
