Police say pedestrian death at railroad tracks in O’Fallon may have been suicide

A 62-year-old man struck and killed by a train on June 18 in O’Fallon may have committed suicide, police say.

The man was identified as Daniel Kelly, 62, from the St. Paul area. Police said they arrived in an area near Genteman Road about 6:17 p.m. after being notified by a caller.

A police news release posted on the police Facebook page reported a caller told them that a “suspicious subject” parked his vehicle just past the railroad track and was sitting on a hill.

Officers say the man walked in front of a moving train when they arrived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the preliminary investigation “is leading to the conclusion that the subject had committed suicide.”  O’Fallon police were investigating in conjunction with Norfolk and Southern Railroad police, police said on June 19.
