Lake Saint Louis Police investigate fatal shooting in car theft case

Authorities are continuing to investigate a fatal shooting that took place in Lake Saint Louis on Nov. 4 after a homeowner confronted a man trying to steal his car from his driveway and shots were fired.

“We’re trying to see if the shooting was justified,” said Lake Saint Louis Police Capt. Chris DiGuiseppi. DiGuiseppi identified the victim as Shawn T. Jimenez, 31, who also is a Lake Saint Louis resident.

Jimenez was found about 1 a.m. on Quail Meadows Court in the driver’s seat of a vehicle taken from a townhouse about a block away on Monterey Cyprus Court. Jimenez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said they received a number of 911 calls, including one about 12:51 a.m. from a caller who said that an unknown suspect was trying to steal his vehicle. The caller told police that he heard his car alarm go off and went outside to confront a man trying to steal his car. He told police that shots had been fired at the scene and requested assistance.

Police and EMS responding found the homeowner’s 2009 Volkswagen Passat with Jimenez inside. The car rolled off of Lake Saint Louis Boulevard, into a backyard and against a home on Quail Meadows, which was undamaged. The homeowner at the townhouse was not injured.

DiGuiseppi said the first homeowner told police he fired shots in a confrontation with a suspected car thief. Police did not say if the man shot was armed or how many shots were fired. Police did not arrest the homeowner at the scene and are working with the St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s office to determine if any charges will be filed.

There are no other suspects for now but police are looking to see if anyone else is involved. Jimenez lived nearby and may have walked to the townhouse, DiGuiseppi said. He also said the homeowner indicated he didn’t know Jimenez.
