Two men died of gunshot wounds and a third person was wounded in a suspected home invasion early Monday morning.
The homeowner and a suspect involved in the incident died, according to the St. Charles Police Department. The homeowner’s son, also shot at the scene, survived, police say.
The three shooting victims were found around 4 a.m. Monday in the backyard of a home in an unincorporated area on the first block Southwinds Drive, off Salt Lick Road and south of Interstate 70.
Police identified the homeowner who died as Daniel Patrick Donovan, 53. The suspect who died, a man in his 20s, has not been identified.
Police are still investigating the circumstances of the shooting, including who shot who. Police were also examining how many shots were fired. The St. Charles County Drug Task Force is also involved in the investigation.
Police said the suspect was armed with two handguns when he entered the home in what police say was a “home invasion,” although exactly how he entered is still under investigation. Once inside, the suspect asked two residents about narcotics.
Donovan became involved in an altercation with the gunman that spilled into the backyard, police say. One of Donovan’s sons joined the fight.
The gunman, Donovan and the son who joined the fight in the backyard were all found shot when police arrived.
The armed suspect died after arriving at the hospital. Donovan died at the hospital. The son who was shot was hospitalized.
