St. Charles County Food Pantry Making Choice Changes

One of the most frequently asked questions they get at the Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Service Food Pantry is, “Do clients get to choose the groceries they receive?”

Well, as of this month, that answer will be a proud and resounding “yes.”

This food pantry, servicing St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren Counties, is now a Client Choice food pantry.

From End Hunger in America's WebsiteAccording to End Hunger in America, the premise of a Client Choice food pantry is just what it sounds like. People in need of food assistance are fully allowed to choose for themselves what products they receive. This, as opposed to giving clients pre-prepared packages of groceries, allows clients to choose their food from a pantry set up like a small grocery store, with products arrayed on shelves and in coolers and freezers. Alternatively, the pantry may provide the clients with a list of items and foods they have available, and then prepare individual packages based on the clients’ selections.

Not only does this format allow food pantries to provide a wide plethora of products to their clients, it works better to help clients meet the nutritional needs of their households. More than that, it will aid to eliminate waste and uphold the dignity of their clients.

As stated in Sts. Joachim and Ann’s Care Service newsletter, “[Clients] will take only the foods they know they will use, which saves money and enables us to provide the foods that best fit our clients.”

Other future changes the Care Service wishes to make to their food pantry includes establishing a case manager in the program to follow up on their clients’ progress.

“A case manager will be able to provide additional resources and extra help, which will make such a difference with things such as budgeting concerns and nutrition.”

They are also working toward tracking measurable incomes, which will indicate the level of success our clients can achieve through this program.

Pantry hours have also been extended to provide greater access to food:

Tuesday: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Wednesday: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Thursday: 3 – 7 p.m.

“This is a major change that will improve the lives of those we serve. We thank all of you who have helped us with this transition through volunteering your time and services as well as those of you who have contributed food and monetary donations. The impact you have made is tremendous!”
