Area fans of figure skating are invited to watch hundreds of the nation’s best young ice skaters this weekend during the ISI Synchronized Skating Championship at the St. Peters Rec-Plex.
The event will take place April 9-10 at the Rec-Plex South building. Attendance is free and open to the general public.
In all, 590 competitors representing 24 rinks from nine different states will take to the ice as part of synchronized teams working together to wow judges and fans. The Rec-Plex’s home team, Synchro St. Louis, will have six teams totaling 61 skaters in the competition.
The 105,000-square-foot Rec-Plex South has two ice rinks, including an arena with seating for up to 1,200 people. The public can come and watch the competition for free between 9:30 a.m.-6:05 p.m. on Saturday, April 9, and between 8:30 a.m.-noon on Sunday, April 10.
Teams from Alabama, California, Colorado, Kentucky, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio and Texas will compete in the event. The ISI is a leading national ice industry trade association that helps develop skating skills.
“What a great opportunity for residents of our community to cheer on our local athletes while enjoying a really interesting and beautiful sport,” said St. Peters Mayor Len Pagano. “This type of sporting event is one of the reasons why we built the Rec-Plex. Not only does it give us great entertainment, it also provides an economic boost for local hotels, restaurants and shops.”
