On Tuesday, Dec. 22, at approximately 9:50 p.m., the St. Peters Police Department received a call from Dillard’s security about a theft in progress. Store employees provided a description and location of the subject. Two St. Peters Police officers were able to immediately respond to the area and witnessed the male subject on the parking lot, with two Dillard’s employees running after him.
The suspect was identified as Darrin Long, 38, of O’Fallon.
St. Peters officers contacted Long as he was getting into his 2006 Jeep Liberty SUV; however, Long is reported to have refused to comply with the officers’ instructions to step out of his vehicle.
According to a press statement released by St. Peters Police, Long looked at the officer who was giving loud commands, then put his car into reverse and quickly accelerated, striking the officer with his vehicle. He then put his vehicle into drive and fled the area. The officer was knocked backward by the force of the vehicle and sustained minor injuries to his left leg. He was able to get back into his police vehicle and subsequently stopped Mr. Long on Veterans Memorial Parkway just east of Mid Rivers Mall Drive.
The injured officer went to Barnes Jewish St. Peters where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office issued warrants for Assault 2nd on a Law Enforcement Officer, Resisting Arrest, Receiving Stolen Property and Unlawful Use of Drug Paraphernalia. He was transported to St. Charles County Jail where he is being held on a $75,000 bond.
