Traverse City sweeps River City, claims first Frontier League Championship

Michael Shreves provided the pitching, while Jay Austin and Jeff DeBlieux supplied the hitting as the Traverse City Beach Bums defeated the River City Rascal 4-1 in game three to clinch the Frontier League Championship Friday night at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O’Fallon, Mo.

The championship was the first in club history for Traverse City, which finished the season at 61-38.

River City. finishing second for the second in the League Championship Series for the second straight season, saw its season end at 59-51.

Shreves was locked in on the hill for the Beach Bums as he pitched six and 2/3 innings, gave up just one run on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Joe Scanio took the loss for River City as went six innings in his start.

Austin was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and DeBlieux was 2 for 4 with an RBI.

Shaky defense also plagued the Rascals as River City committed two errors.

Frontier League MVP Taylor Ard was the only Rascals batter to get more than one hit as the River City third baseman was 2 of 4 on the night.

Traverse City scored a run in the first, a run in the third and two in the fourth on nine hits.

River City scored in its only run in the bottom of the fourth on Zazh Komentani sacrifice fly.
