What do you get when two lifelong friends decide to go into the restaurant business? A great atmosphere and really great food. At least that’s the case with A’mis Italian Restaurant.
Owner Ami Damte, with the help of his long-time friend Shabtai Moria, has mastered the art of made-from-scratch pizza, but the pair are always looking for ways to improve what they offer. Recently they added five specialty pizzas to the menu – Margherita pizza, buffalo chicken, barbecue, chicken Alfredo, and even a breakfast pizza, which is an omelet-inspired medley of vegetables and scrambled eggs atop A’mis’ house made thin crust dough.
“We wanted to try and add a little something extra with these pizzas,” Dante said.
But fear not, all of their menu staples remain intact, including their 19-inch Manhattan-style pizza that’s enough for the whole family.
Damte claims that there’s no other pizza like it in the St. Louis area and that even customers who come from places like New York and Chicago say that it rivals what they have back home. With all made-from-scratch ingredients it can be hard for the competition to keep up.
“We used to have a Papa John’s next door, but they left after only one year,” Moria said. He added that even the employees at Papa John’s would order from A’mis on a regular basis.
In addition to adding menu items, Damte and Moria are looking to make it easier for customers to get their hands on an A’mis pizza. Their O’Fallon restaurant, located in Monticello Plaza off Hwy. K, has been renovated to include a 110-seat dining room plus outside seating. Damte and Moria also have expanded their delivery area to include customers of their former Brian Road location. That location closed when the existing store was renovated in 2009.
“We could give customers a larger area to come and eat,” said Moria of merging the two locations. “We want our customers in that area to know that we can still send deliveries to them with our expanded delivery area. We don’t want them to hesitate from giving us a call.”
Calling isn’t the only way to order carryout. A’mis has added online ordering to its website for customer convenience.
For customers who do decide to come and dine in, the experience comes complete with great prices and daily specials, which include a free large cheese pizza with the purchase of a large cheese pizza or deep-dish on Monday nights. A’mis also plays all local sporting events on televisions in the restaurant and runs specials during home games for supporters of our hometown heroes.
“It is really a great atmosphere,” Moria said. “We have a great group of employees here.”
Some employees have worked at A’mis O’Fallon since the location opened eight years ago, and Moria said the restaurant is always looking for more talented individuals to join the team.
“We have been increasing our staff at this location recently,” Moria said. “We want to make sure that all of our customers get the best service they can.”
In addition to pizza, A’mis offers a whole menu of fresh-made favorites that include everything from steaks to sandwiches. There truly is something for everyone and customers can expect that the same care that goes into A’mis’ pizzas goes into every order.
The proof is in the dressing – salad dressing, that is. In fact, 9 out of 10 customers who try A’mis’ house dressing suggest that it be bottled and sold at the supermarket, according to Moria.
So if you’re in the mood for a great meal made with care – and a great atmosphere where customers become friends, check out A’mis Italian Restaurant in O’Fallon today.
