The first quarter of Holt’s football opener was a smashing success for new coach Ethan Place.
After a quarter of play, the Indians held a 13-0 lead and looked primed to knock off Gateway South power Fort Zumwalt West.
In the second quarter, Zumwalt West stars Jake Strauss, Ethan Staskiewicz, and Marquis Majors found their rhythm and Holt found itself on the wrong end of the scoreboard as Zumwalt West exploded for three second quarter touchdowns on the way to a 55-13 win at Fort Zumwalt West Friday night.
Strauss, the Zumwalt West quarterback, scored on touchdown runs of 18, 13, and 49 yards while senior running back Staskiewicz scored on runs of four yards, 49 yards, and 14 yards.
Holt (0-1) struck first with a touchdown on a 23-yard Emilio Monsivais pass to Jake Koons to go up 7-0 with 9:34 left in the first quarter.
The Indians pushed the lead to 13-0 on a 58-yard Monsivais to Koons scoring aerial which made it 13-0 with with 1:53 lef tin the first quarter.
After scoring 21 unanswered points in the second quarter, Zumwalt West (1-0) exploded for four third quarter touchdowns to put a stranglehold on the game.
Strauss scored the first two touchdowns and Staskiewicz scored a pair, including a four yard run which made it 49-13 with 1:43 to go in the third quarter.
Majors scored on 20 yard run in the second quarter.
