Dardenne Prairie Alderman Doug Santos (Ward 2) announced Aug. 19 that he was resigning his seat on the city’s Board of Aldermen to spend more time with his family.
Santos, who was elected to a two-year term in April 2014, said he had recently spent four days in the hospital with a sick child.
“It made me realize I wasn’t spending enough time with him,” Santos said.
His resignation was effective at the meeting. Mayor David Zucker thanked Santos for his service to the city and said he was personally saddened, but noted, “I understand the reason.” Santos received a round of applause from aldermen and the meeting’s audience.
The board will appoint a replacement for Santos to fill out the remaining months of his unexpired term. The seat is up for election next April.
Ward 2 residents who want to be considered for the appointment can submit an application to the city. The application can be found on the city’s website at www.dardenneprairie.org. The deadline for applications is Aug. 27.
The board will consider the applications and meet with candidates during their workshop meeting immediately prior to the board’s regularly scheduled meeting on Sept. 2. The board is expected to make a decision on filling the vacancy at their regular meeting on Sept. 16.
Santos, a St. Charles County police officer, had previously run unsuccessfully to unseat former mayor Pam Fogarty in 2013 before being elected in 2014.
