Instead of enjoying barbecue on Memorial Day, the Lutheran St. Charles Cougars will be playing baseball in another postseason game.
Number two seed Lutheran St. Charles scored three runs early and then rode the strong pitching of Mathew Seacrist and Bryce Jefferson to a 5-2 victory over top-seeded Wright City on Thursday in the Class 3, District 6 championship game at John F. Kennedy High School.
Next up for Lutheran St. Charles (13-11) will be a sectional contest on Monday afternoon against Lutheran North (12-14).
Lutheran got out of the box quick in the first inning as the Wildcats put three runs up in the top of the first.
Wright City got runs back in the second and third innings, cutting it to 3-2.
The Cougars responded with a run in the top of the fourth and then added an insurance tally in the top of the sixth making it 5-2.
Mathew Seacrist and Patrick Seacrist provided the big bats for the Cougars with two hits each. Patrick Seacrist also drove in two runs.
On the mound, Mathew Seacrist was rock solid for six innings as he scattered six hits, gave up two runs, struck out eight and walked two. Jefferson pitched a scoreless seventh inning to pick up the save for Lutheran.
The loss for Wright City snapped a eight-game winning streak going back to April 30.
Lutheran St. Charles has won three straight and four of its last five games heading into Monday’s sectional.
