Spelling Bee champs

Spelling champsTwenty-six fourth and fifth-graders from 13 Fort Zumwalt School District elementary schools gathered with family and friends at East High on Jan. 15 for the annual Spelling Bee.

Students triumphed, conquering words such as “curriculum,” “ephemeral” and “eiderdown.” And students stumbled, falling prey to such words as “mongrel,” “croquette” and “yacht.”

In the end, there were two fifth-graders left standing for Round 21. Twin Chimneys’ Surya Sompali made it past words such as “maestro” and “hollandaise” to correctly spell “gourami.” Pheasant Point’s Kaelen Raible made it past words such as “illuminati” and “gymkhana,” but stumbled on “gauche.”

In the end, the championship word was “camouflage,” which put Sompali over the top to take first place. Raible took second place, and Karthik Digavalli placed third.
