Howell Central wins Class 4 third place game, Zumwalt South ties Smith-Cotton

A day after losing a 2-1 heartbreaker to Lee’s Summit in the Class 4 semifinals at Blue Springs South in Suburban Kansas City, the Francis Howell Central soccer team made sure their first trip to state would not be fruitless.

The Spartans bounced back well in the third place game against Rockhurst on Saturday morning, using a pair of second half goals from Kyle Setchfield and a strong effort in-goal from Chase Webert and David Beecher to post a 2-0 victory.

Kyle Setchfield put the Spartans on top with an unassisted goal at the 61:43 mark of the second half to go up 1-0.

In the closing moments of the game, Setchfield scored again off a Justin Stinson corner kick to make it 2-0 with at the 75:11 mark.

Howell Central’s defense gave Webert and Beecher plenty of support as Lee’s Summit managed just six shots and Webert and Beecher only had to make one save each.

Howell Central, which made its first ever state tournament appearance, finished the season at 23-5-1. Lee’s Summit ended the season at 21-8.

In the Class 3 third place game Saturday, Fort Zumwalt battled Sedalia Smith-Cotton to a 1-1 standoff. The tie helped the Bulldogs slightly ease the sting of losing Friday’s semifinal match to Springfield Glendale 3-2.

Alex Wenner put Smith-Cotton ahead 1-0 with a goal at the 66:28 mark.

With just 21 seconds left in regualtion, Zumwalt South’s Brendan Mann found the back of the goal, off an assist from Michael Wade to tie it at 1-1.

Andrew Orf went the distance in-goal for Zumwalt South making five saves on the day.

Zumwalt South finished out its season at 20-7-2. The state tournament trip was the first in school history.
