It’s Week 4 of the high school football season and a big rivalry game highlights the schedule for area teams.
The Marquette Mustangs(1-2) will play at Lafayette (0-3) against the Lancers. The kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday (Sept. 12).
This will be the first time playing this game for new Mustangs coach Matt Klein.
Lafayette has won eight of the last 10 meetings with the Mustangs. Last year, the Lancers won 35-3.
Marquette is coming in off a tough 22-14 loss at Jackson. The Mustangs took a 14-6 lead with 6:43 to play. Jacobi Boykin scored on a 2-yard run. Marquette converted the two-point play when Jack Whitworth caught a pass from Jason Powers to take a 14-8 lead.
However, Jackson scored on a 9-yard run with 1:41 to play. After extra point, Jackson led 15-14. Jackson added the insurance touchdown with an 85-yard interception return for a touchdown with 19 seconds left.
Lafayette lost a close one in the opener by falling 17-15 to visiting Eureka. The Lancers then fell 35-21 at Hazelwood Central. Last week, Lafayette lost 48-21 at Kirkwood.
Lancers coach Boyd Manne said his squad continues to practice hard.
“Our team is working hard every day and working on improving,” Manne said. “Marquette is a well coached team and they do a great job of running the football.”
