It was a good day for Cameron Scales and the Lafayette Lancer offense but an even better day for Hazelwood Central’s Kevin Batt and Mike Glass.
Batt ran for two touchdowns and Glass threw for two scores as the highly-regarded Hawks downed the Lancers 35-21 Saturday at Hazelwood Central in a non conference game.
Lafayette (0-2) continues to search for its first victory of the 2014 season.
The day started well for Lafayette as Scales scored on a 1-yard touchdown keeper to make it 7-0 with 4:38 left in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Hazelwood Central’s offense woke up and got things going via air and ground.
Central even the count at 7-7 on a 20-yard pass from Glass to Jordan Croft with 3:21 left in the second quarter.
Then the Hawks struck quick with the ground game as Batt started churning up yards from his running back spot in the backfield.
Batt scored on 15-yard run and added a 9-yard scoring run all in the span of just under two minutes to giver the Hawks a 21-7 lead with just 1:39 left before the halftime break.
Down 28-7 heading into the fourth quarter, the Lancers tried to rally in the fourth as Brendan Scales hauled in an 8-yard pass from Cameron Scales with making it 28-13 with 4:19 left. The point after kick failed.
Central reestablished its big lead though on the next series as Glass ripped off a 41-yard touchdown with 3:40 to go.
Lafayette got a late touchdown on a 7-yard pass from Trevor McMurray to Brian Boyd but it was too little after the fact for the Lancers.
