Timberland defense stifles host Chaminade for 16-6 win

Returning home for week two of the prep football season was not as productive offensively or in the win column for the Chaminade Red Devils.

Just week after scoring 50 points at Mehlville, the host Red Devils could not get to the end zone often against a much stouter Timberland defense.

Timberland rode its rugged run defense and a balance offense to a 16-6 victory over Chaminade on Friday night.

Brendan Rowe got the Wolves on the board first with a 33-yard field goal just nine seconds into the second quarter.

Chaminade (1-1) responded with a big play in the passing game as Michael McGovern hooked up with Reggie Crawford on a 41-yard scoring pass at 8:35 of the third quarter. After the PAT kick failed, the Red Devils were up 6-3. McGovern hit 11 of 22 passes for 223 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions.

Late in the third quarter, Timberland (2-0) got its offense going and bounced back. A 9-yard touchdown run from Andrew Jehle with 1:47 left put the Wolves back on top 10-6.

In the fourth quarter, the teams battled back and forth with field position. But Chaminade could not get back into the end zone.

Timberland’s run game came through again in the final half of the fourth quarter as running back Jason Onwugbiko broke loose for a 36-yard touchdown scamper. The extra point kick was no good and Timberland led 16-6 with 3:45 left.

Darius Daies paced the Chaminade run game with 138 yards rushing on 19 carries. Zach Wilhelm led the Red Devil defense with six tackles and 14 assists.
