Hazelwood Central senior quarterback Mike Glass and senior running back Kevin Batt made life as miserable for the De Smet Jesuit defense as the blistering heat at Hazelwood Central on Saturday.
Glass passed for 194 yards passing and ran for 122 yards on the ground while Batt ran for 125 yards on 12 carries and scored a pair of touchdowns as Hazelwood Central pounded the Spartans 49-24.
All in all the Hawks rolled up 596 yards of offense on an overmatched De Smet Jesuit defense.
The day was not a total loss for the Spartans though as junior quarterback Andrew Effer showed solid effectiveness in the pocket.
Effer connected for three touchdowns with Griffin Palmer on throws of 16, 8, and 20 yards and showed solid mobility in the pocket to keep several De Smet Jesuit drives going early in the game.
De Smet Jesui (0-1) travels to Columbia Rock Bridge Friday night for a nonconference game. Hazelwood Central (1-0) plays host to Lafayette Saturday at 1 p.m.
John Burroughs 43, Cardinal Ritter 0
John Burroughs running back John Moten ran for three touchdowns on three of the Bombers first five drives against visiting Cardinal Ritter.
Moten ran wild for 196 yards on the ground while Bombers quarterback Tre Moore threw for three scores and 116 yards with two of the scoring strikes going to junior Ryan Mill as top-ranked Burroughs rolled to an easy season-opening win.
Moten scored early in the first quarter on a 23-yard run to make it 7-0 and then he added a 28-yard scoring dash making it 14-0 with just a couple of minutes left in the first quarter.
A Chris Vachow safety made it 16-0 late in the first quarter. Moore connected with Ronald Smith on a 47-yard aerial early in the second quarter and then Moten scored his final rushing TD of the day on 47-yard dash just two and a half minutes into the second quarter for a 23-0 lead.
