MICDS’ Wellford makes commitment to play lacrosse at Virginia

MICDS midfielder Harry Wellford has made a verbal commitment to play Division I Lacrosse at the University of Virginia. The program is widely-known for its recruiting successes mainly from the East Coast; Wellford is the first St. Louis lacrosse player to commit to an Atlantic Coast Conference school.

After considering Duke, Princeton, Georgetown, Notre Dame and a few others, Wellford decided on the Cavaliers. In addition to having the opportunity to play for the all-time winningest coach, Don Starsia, Wellford is excited to attend one of the best academic schools in the nation where he plans to study business or pre-med.

“Joining the University of Virginia’s program means I will have the opportunity for a top-notch academic experience while playing lacrosse at the highest level in the coolest setting for players and fans,” said Wellford.

Wellford, who has been playing lacrosse for 10 years, was a key performer for the State Champion Rams, registering 27 goals and 23 assists and earning first-team all-state and first-team all-conference honors during his freshman season.

“This game means so much to me and it has played a key role in the way I have matured.  It is a source of joy and competition and my teammates are really like family,” said Wellford.

MICDS coach Andy Kay said he was not surprised to see Wellford’s talents noticed nationally as he possesses an incredibly diverse skill set.

“Harry is both big and fast and he has tremendous stick skills, he said. “Most importantly, Harry loves his teammates, plays the game unselfishly, and he is a true MICDS man. This couldn’t have happened to a better person.”

Wellford credits much of his success and his enjoyment of the game to his coach, team members and school who have had an immeasurable positive influence on him.

“Our team is like a family and that’s why we are so successful – and our School loves and supports our program,” he said.  “The education and maturity that MICDS bestows upon me and all of us students really helps position us to have these types of opportunities.”
