It was a banner final week of regular season play for the Ballwin Post 611 senior legion baseball team.
Ballwin opened the week by sweeping a doubleheader over Manchester on Monday (July 7) and then finished out the week in equally strong fashion with a 13-5 road win over Imperial on Friday (July 11).
Ballwin heads into this week’s District 10 Tournament with a 25-5 mark and went a perfect 14-0 to capture the regular season District 10 championship.
“It was a really, really good and productive week for us and we had played 15 games in about the last two weeks,” Ballwin manager Sean Rogan said. “So, to get those last two weeks behind us and get a lot of kids playing time that don’t normally play heading into districts on such a strong note was really good for us.”
Ballwin started off the week on Monday at Ellisville Athletic Association with an impressive twi-night doubleheader sweep of Manchester Post 208, winning the first game in seven innings 10-0, and taking the nightcap in a 6-5 nail-biter.
“Manchester’s a really tough club and anytime you can beat them twice in a day, it’s a really good thing for our kids,” Rogan said.
Post 611 scored four in the second, one in the third, and five runs in the fifth inning on nine hits to put Manchester on its heels.
Tyler Wood and Evan Aliano provided the big bats with two hits apiece as Wood drove in three runs.
On the mound, it was righthander Jack Fladda dealing strong from the start as he pitched a complete game shutout to move to 5-2 on the season.
“Jack did an outstanding job on the mound and was really sharp from the beginning,” Rogan said.
In the nightcap, Ballwin managed to break a 5-5 tie with a run in the ninth inning to pull out the game and in effect clinch the district title.
“The second game was really tight and we felt fortunate to pull that one out, “Rogan said.
Ben Mitchell and Drew Ellis led Ballwin with two hits each. Mitchell had 2-RBI on the evening.
Augie Clark picked up the win for Ballwin with an inning of relief and Mitchell got the save.
The week finished for Ballwin with on Friday with a 13-5 non-district win at Imperial Post 283.
Next up for Ballwin is an opening round game in the District 10 Tournament at EAA Tuesday (July 15) at 5:30 p.m. Post 611 is expected to be the overwhelming favorite to gain the top seed in the tournament which begins in earnest on Tuesday.
“I think we have the depth in pitching with a lot of guys that can throw strikes and throw hard and we have the depth with our hitters and positions that we can do a lot of things to make a deep-run in the playoffs,” Rogan said.
