School district honors vets

Schools throughout the Wentzville School District honored our soldiers, sailors, and airmen with a variety of celebrations during the recent Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11. At Peine Ridge Elementary, Retired Navy Commander John Wadsworth told students and parents about his career, and how traveling the world has helped him realize that we shouldn’t take our safety and security for granted in this country.

Third-grade teacher Amy Wulfert proved to be a singer as well as a teacher with her rendition of the National Anthem, and the Singspirations choir entertained the crowd with a medley of patriotic songs.

Duello Elementary had an early breakfast for veterans, and eager Cub Scouts enjoyed the honor of leading Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine veterans to their seating area. Service men and women took turns sharing their experiences and telling students what serving in our armed forces has meant to them.

Students at Crossroads Elementary participated in “The Power of 11 Cents,” a fund raising project to benefit the Missouri Military Family Relief Fund. Elementary students are asked to donate 11 cents, and while it might not seem like much, the program has raised more than $50,000 to support troops and their families.

Major General Rob Carrothers spoke about the American flag as a symbol of freedom, and then the Crossroads Singing Sensations, directed by Janet Studstill, performed the non-traditional but very inspirational “Allegiance Rap.”

The ceremonies had veterans from all branches of service and from all walks of life.
